Story about the stolen bike in Canada with a happy end

The funniest is that I bring my bike from Ukraine to save $125 per month because TTC pass (municipal transport)!

The 9-th of August my bicycle was stolen!

I parked it near luxury apartment building which I worked.

In this post I am going to tell you a story with unpredictable ending!!!

In addition I will give you the advices how to safe you bike and what you should do if somebody steals it.

The 9-th of August my Foreman was going to pick me up to home. We arranged to meet near the entrance. I was
knocked out when I came downstairs. I couldn't understand the things location at the parking.

On that place where I parked my bike in the morning, was staying another one...in a few seconds I had seen my helmet and cut lock on the ground. My first thinking were 'F.uc, f.ck, f.ck!!!' (that time I have already used filthy language))))
I could not understand how it  happened with me! I used two locks!
My foreman came and I told him the problem. The first Brain's words were 'F.uc, f.ck, f.ck!!!'
We came to the front desk to with camera recording, but there was not any useful screens.

We decided to go home without calling to Police, because this is the time down the drain.

During we went home Brian was telling me who did he lose his motorbike in the U.S., and Police nothing to do in that case.

When I came home I was told Julia sad news. The worse that this bike was the Julia's present on my 25-th anniversary.

I wrote to Marcus (Marcus Burtmy best English teacher about my. Marcus has great experience, because he lose 4-th bikes!!! in Toronto.

Hi gave me an advice to call to Police, but my chance are almost zero. Also he recommended me don't spend to much time to look for my bike on Kijiji, because it was make me upset.

Also he gave me a link about guy from the States who return his bike from thief after it was stolen. YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT!!!

I called to Police at nigh and told them my story.

Police officer told me to call in the morning next day. F.CK!!!

Ok. I call to Police in the morning. After the several reconnection between operators they told me that will call me back!!!

They called me back in half an hour.

I told him the serial number of my bike from receipt and dull description of all the details.

Also I should spell to them the brand  AUTHOR, because they heard it at the first time (there are no bikes of this brand).

The only2 thing they did for me is 2 advices:

the first advice to buy a $150 lock, the second one is to register a new bike in the Toronto Police bike data base.

After the conversation with Police, I have understood that nobody will look for my bike. Also I have understood that I lose my bike for ever!
In that moment I thought That i should buy TTC weekly pass and to look for cheap ( less than $100) bike for the city. And to start to gather the money for a new bicycle that I would buy in Ukraine.

The 15- th of August I did nothing special in the evening. Suddenly I decided to check Kijiji website for the word AUTHOR. And OMG!!! Only 10 hours ago an ad was posted with photos of my bike (Author Basic) that someone sell it in Guelph city which is 100 km from Toronto for $300!!!

In a second I felt adrenalin in hurt. It will be great adventure. I felt it in my bones))

After this we found to more ads with my bike for $250 and $300 with different photos.
Also we found to ads which had pretty similar style to our one. We were thinking that those bike were stolen too.

In the morning I am calling to Police. They told me that would call me during an hour.

After 4 hours!!! I am calling to them one more time. 'What we going to do' I ask them 'somebody can buy my bike, we should harry up!!!'
I got an answer that the are over downloaded!!!

During the day I am watching on the growing of views with "my" bike.

Police call to me in 4 hour. They ask me ' do I have a thief's address or phone number' ' of course no' 'sorry we can not do anything' they replied ' you should phone to detective'

Ok! I am calling to detective. I receive an answer that he is out of the desk. They offer me to call from 6 am till 1 pm next day!!! I CAN"T BELIEVE!!!

We have understood that we should work by ourselves.
Понимаем, что надо действовать самим.

I wrote the letter to organisation Getoutt which is working in the field of protecting of vehicles.

I've gotten the advices:

1. Make a plan with thief.

2. To gather the crew from 3 or 4 guys.
3. T o come with photo and video cameras. And without fights. Try to not kick because we can fly to the jail.
4. Try to call the police during an appointment.

It is action time!

We are asking our neighbour with car and with writing a letter for our ad on Kijiji.During the evening we was writing several letter to seller and made a plan with him on 8 am the next morning. Now, we have already knew his email, so my google-specialist Julia  (kurilova.com.ua),  found Google, Linked In accounts and job place!!!

At 6-30 am Daniel and I left home and went to Guelph. Before this Daniel put in the car 2 wooden clubs.

At 8 am we were near the house.

We had 2 plans:

1) Daniels is staying in the car approximately 200 meter from house, I am going to look my bike, I ask to make test circle, sit and go away very fast toward to car;

2) We are coming to house, I am going to look my bike, I ask to make test circle, do it and come back, I tell that I like it and want to buy, Daniel ask seller where is the closer ATM, Daniel go for Police and I stay with bike and seller.

We used the second plan.

During the time Daniel was absent I talked with sellers and had the sun bath. Actually, the seller wasn't bad man. He is Filipino. Work as mechanic at the night shift and than during the day repair and sell bicycles. He has a wife and children. I think he is a good and intelligent man, but a little bit silly if he do this bad work with stolen bicycles.

As I have knew during our conversation to sell my bicycle was pretty difficult because it has European brand that is not common in Canada. Even Filipino reduce the price from $300 till $200. By the way currently it cost $700))
8 bicycle more were in garage at that time!!! As I understood they were stolen too.

Also Filipino offer me to buy except my bicycle Giant Defy for $600 (currently it cost$1500).

After 40 minutes of waiting a police car came. Filipino became pale.

The police officer began to ask all the details about bicycle. Than one more police car come with dog inside.

The police officers took out all the bicycles from garage and start to tell serial numbers to police department using radio set.

NO ONE from bicycle were not in police data base except mine. I think that the main reason of this is that nobody believe that police will look for stolen bike.

Also in Filipino's garage were a lot of bicycle's accessories. I tried to find mine. I had not luck.

In total I lost 1 pannier, underframe bag, holder for my computer, some tools and pump.

BUT my bike has the second birthday!!!

Thanks everybody for your help, especially Julia, Daniel, Marcus and Simon Jackson (Getoutt )

We posted an ad about stolen Giant Defy. We will be upset if it does not find his owner.

Advices:

1. Don't left your stuff for a long time.
2. Don't use wire locks. And don't think that if you have two locks it will be more safe. A thief cut your lock for 5 second ( I think).
3. If you are living in Toronto, you should register your bike in the Bicycle Police Data base  BicycleRegistry .  Probably, it can help you.
4. Don't think that police will do something. Do yourself.

p.s. please, push the button "like" in Facebook and put the link of this post on your page, i really want that cyclists will know how to do , if they lost their bike.

You can left comments and ask me questions. I will answer with pleasure!
